Stranger Things - Demogorgon

As a look development artist on Netflix's Stranger Things S4, I worked on updating the Demogorgon. While the creature had appeared in previous seasons, this time it was shown up close and in well-lit scenes, unlike the shadowy appearances in Season 1. The Duffer Brothers wanted this version to look more adult and stronger, so we were tasked with refreshing its appearance.

For the look development, I created three different of bloodiness and degradation, since the creature is fighting in an arena and eating people. Our goal was to stay true to the Season 1 version while enhancing the details. One particular challenge was the lighting in the arena, which contrasted sharply and darkened the creature. To avoid poor integration, we decided to adjust the look development specifically to fit the lighting conditions, rather than sticking with a uniform look across all scenarios. This also allowed more flexibility for the compositing team, which explains the albino-like appearance in the TTB studio.

There was a lot of back-and-forth with the texturing artist to push the realism while staying subtle. We focused on details like subtle hue changes, dirt under the nails, dried blood, the integration of teeth with the mouth flaps, and scarring—making it feel like the creature had a life beyond just the sequence it appeared in. Despite these updates, we kept the design light enough to maintain continuity with the original look from Season 1.

The textures were made by my awesome teammates Diego Romo and the modeling by Philip Harris-Genois.

The studio context turntable. We kept this context as a reference to find the right balance for the other lighting scenarios. We had to keep the texture contrasts subtle.

An animation that shows how much work went into giving life to the creature. Kudos to the animators for the whole sequence !
